Millenium Skatepark

Oil and money... oil money, cowfolks with "sophisticated" biotechnology schemes, too many one-way streets and the largest free outdoor skatepark in North America (did I mention oil money?)... flying into Calgary, Alberta, Canada from the west coast is a trip... right where the Rocky Mountains end and the prairies begin is where this bustling town is located.

Since we're not oil barons, cowboys or evil biotechnology engineers, the main attraction could only be this amazing skateboard park recently constructed by the city. Massive is the first word that comes to mind when attempting to describe this expansive concrete wonderland. Here's the quick run-down:

  • big open area for tech skating with various banks, wedges, ledges, rails, flatbars and other treats.
  • big open reservoir style thing
  • killer little bathtub bowl with coping
  • nutty little horseshoe bowl with coping
  • crazed approximation of a pool shallow end with coping
  • big section with various level 1/4 pipes all hooked together with wedges and trannys of different diameters
  • 35 foot diameter full pipe leading into a 13 foot deep 1/2 pipe with metal coping which leads into a 9 foot deep 1/2 pipe with metal coping and bowl end
  • the best triple clover with continuous metal cope throughout the 4 foot 6 foot and 8 foot radial bowls... smooth and speedy. If you hate skateboarding, this clover bowl will make you love it.

we busted out a longboard cruise around downtown Calgary hosted by the shop frozen ocean. here are most of us posing like geeks in front of the shop<p><img

Steve Lange of North Vancouver leads a traffic jam through Calgary's metal glass and concrete horizon

Langer and Gary Harris were in full mockery mode with their black cowboy hats. Here Gary H pushes to catch the longboard pack.

Steve Olson bombs the parking lot spiral run sit down style with his chain wallet dangling in an uncaring manner.

Steve Lange blew minds at the park on his 46" Souldier longboard... here he snaps a frontside out of the clover.

Gary Harris skates very powerhousey. He did long fast grinds like this one all over the place.

Over the hip frontside was always my favorite in the pool skating days... P.D. into the void.

This flick gives you some idea of the size of this place... Olson looks dwarfed carving this oversized environment.

Fun sessions went down in this little tub bowl. Steve Olson shows us some frontside flair.

Steve Olson's son, Alexander, wouldn't let anyone take photos of him... Lisa had to sneak this olllie over a barrel.

Langer on fire with a quarter pipe to flat wall transfer. this guy is unstoppable on his longboard.

Olson's surf style cannot be described in a half photo caption such as this... backside clover carve

We skated evenings into the wee hours. Fully lit and alienesque, Steve Lange fakie rocks the 13 foot half pipe

This photo is dedicated to Art Dickey (obscure one foot carve reference). Backside carve grind with one foot lifted by P.D.

Garry Harris with an unrehearsed backside floater above the radial contours of the sick Millenium skatepark.
