The following is
an interview conducted by this crazy English bugger named Warren Tellam who
keeps harassing and stalking us via e-mail. This piece supposedly ran in some
shitty magazine, which we've never seen. Recently, while digging through files
of bogus material, we found it and decided we could probably run it on the
site disguised as original content. Any names or events should not be confused
with actual people or places, but considered simply as fictional entertainment.
Warren: Do you feel that the current crop of skate companies dedicate
far too much time to ousting each other in the popularity stakes, while
not providing a decent level of quality to the people (morons) who provide
them with their living? (Please go on and on and
) Was it better
in the days when Powell, Alva, D.Town, etc. controlled the monopoly, but
had a good grasp of the idea of individualism? Was the crash in 89-90
just evolution, greed, or a product of the burgeoning growth of fundamental
Christians within the scene making a buck for Rev. Mountain and the bible
slappers? (Sic em' mate!)
P.D.- Go ahead, just ask and answer your own questions
The
current crop of skate companies is simply mimicking what it sees all over
our Capitalist society. The corporate culture model of business seems
to have everyone by the short and curlies. Why earn your living when you
can fuck someone out of theirs? Yes, I would say that its pretty obvious
that packaging and promotion take priority over function and quality for
most people in the so-called skateboard industry, but that's always been
that way
doesn't anyone remember the tens of thousands of Powell
Boneite decks that delaminated? Over production definitely helped fuel
the crash of the late eighties as it had in the sixties and the seventies
that combined with the law enforcement harassment and the media
sensationalism.
Warren: How do you feel about 'skate fashion' (Durrr-stupid) gaining
such a worldwide toe hold in mainstream society at large? (Rant at the
fuckers who think clothes = skateboarding).
P.D.- Kind of a double edge sword, isn't it? The co-opting of skateboarding
has kept it (the skateboard industry) from the cyclical jaws of death
while, at the same time, threatening to suck out it's soul leaving only
an animated form devoid of it's own culture. If you look beyond the industry
and beyond the cargo pants and fingerboards and see skateboarding outside
of this particular time frame it's hard not to recognize that what makes
the actual act of skateboarding so appealing is that it will go where
it wants to go. That is to say, you cannot control skateboarding from
an evolutionary standpoint as it continues to develop and expand into
new areas. Skateboarding's saving grace is it's difficulty, which ensures
limited participation. The non-skateboarders may be able to wear the clothing,
but just as a chicken has wings, the frustrated fuckers can't fly.
Warren: Is Fausto mafi
Is skateboarding at the moment corrupt?
(Nail Rocco, I'll blank his name out to avoid lawyers, e.g. George Orwell/1884/head
of totalitarian state). Discuss your shoddy treatment.
P.D.- When you start with the basic premise that capitalism wears
the mask of democracy it's a given that all within a misrepresented system
is corrupt. Probably 90% of the skateboarding industry is located in the
U.S.A., which is the most corrupt place on this planet
. I don't
think it's hard to figure out that people selling skateboards, that don't
even ride them, are fucking corrupt bastards.
Warren: What are you doing to change things?
P.D.- Generally we are doing the same as we have always been doing,
which is to show that a company can be viable without growth. More specifically,
I would urge people to begin to unlearn what they have been taught. Thinking
and receiving information are not the same things. Once you unlearn, you
can think and receive information knowing they are different.
Warren: Out of the following '70's sitcoms, which are your favorites?
1. George and Mildred.
2. Mutiny On the Buses.
3. Porridge.
Name your favorite character, and why.
P.D.- On the Buses was one of my favorite back when I watched t.v.
My favorite character was Jack
Big fucking nose, hideous rotten
teeth, the ugliest motherfucker, and yet totally famous. That kind of
shit doesnt happen in North America, land of lyposuction and fake
tits.
Warren: Books, films, stuff that moves you (No, not laxatives)
discuss.
P.D.- Books by Daniel Quinn (Ishmael, My Ishmael, The Story of
B), if you haven't read these books, you should. Movies, I have to say
I was hooked on Star Wars since I saw the first one in the movie theater.
The originality of the whole Star Wars concept is what grabbed me. Besides
Star Wars; Repo Man, Drugstore Cowboy, Do The Right Thing, The Pope Of
Greenwich Village, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Clerks, The River's
Edge, The Warriors, Style Wars, old horror flicks, Jason And The Argonauts
way too many to list here, but the best flick I've seen in recent
years was, "When We Where Kings", a documentary about Muhammad
Ali
fucking inspirational. P.S. fuck television, I got rid of my
t.v. about six years ago and it was like a huge weight being lifted from
my shoulders. Televisions are like big remote control units that control
human action and perceptions
fuck 'em.
Warren: Music. Do you feel that the, 'be a Pepsi punk t-shirts'
in The great Rock and Roll Swindle was prescient in the extreme? What
do you think of modern punk? (Sorry). Who do you like and why? (All eras).
P.D.- Fuck The Rock and Roll Swindle, Malcolm Maclearn is a bitch
and The Swindle was made from table scraps. I couldn't comment on modern
punk because I haven't heard any
I will say that the recent wave
of MC5 type bands is pretty fucking tired. To be original is a risk most
people don't want to take; it's easier to do a version of something that's
already worked. Honestly, I lost interest in the whole style when it became
fused with longhair metal music in the mid '80's. I guess they called
that Thrash Metal or Skate Rock or whatever
to me it's garbage.
I liked it better when punks had their own thing. Lou Reed, NY Dolls,
Sex Pistols, The Ruts, The Stranglers, Stiff Little Fingers, Angelic Upstarts,
The Subhumans (Canadian), D.O.A., The Adolescents
even GBH and
The Exploited had much more going on than that contrived Suicidal Tendencies,
DRI style bullshit. That metal posturing doesn't mix with the punk ethic
from my viewpoint. Tony Alva introduced me to hip-hop in the early '80's
and that old hip-hop is like old punk rock use to be.
Warren: Did you ever have a moment, when you looked at the people
surrounding you in school, and you saw lab rats scurrying through mazes,
scrabbling with their tiny paws for their rewards of sex, status, and
money? Did you think, "Fuck this, it's horrible" and promptly
went out and behaved in a manner suitable to your soul?
P.D.- Schools are designed to keep people stupid. I think this
dawned on me in about grade seven when I realized I had to 'dummy down'
so I could relate to teachers and classmates. I am not saying that I was
smarter, I just mean that this system is designed to kind of herd people
into a placated ignorance which didnt appeal to me. I remember when
I finally decided to quite school early in grade 11 and I was all nervous
because I had to tell my counselor plus my folks and shit. When I finally
spit it out they were all, "yeah, O.K."
what a fucking
relief to be done with that bullshit.
Warren: Where is Feed I?
P.D.- Feed I lives in Vancouver where he drives a truck and is
raising his son without the help of the kid's mom. He's pretty much out
of the scene, but I keep in touch and try to get him out skimboarding
and longboarding every once in awhile. I think he got burnt on the whole
industry thing
He's cool and I respect his right to live how he
wants to.
Warren: And lastly, give the world the statement of P.D. Let them
fear. Oh yes, the Black Watch never retreat. Phew!
P.D.- Closing statement, use your Skul.
